Recently, the site Phys.org—which covers develops in a variety of science-based fields—published an article discussing how the increasingly prevalent use of home solar power systems in California is affecting the lives of homeowners.
Home Solar Systems Significantly Reduce the Pain of Power Bills
The article describes how a resident of Los Angeles, Jacquie Barnbrook, got fed up with her costly electricity and water bills, which routinely cost her $400 per month during the summer. She installed a solar system on the roof of her home, and her summertime power and water bills now total about $150 per month, a savings of $250 per month.
What was particularly interesting about this particular anecdote is that the homeowner decided to double up on her savings by purchasing a hybrid plug-in vehicle. Typical hybrids, such as the original versions of the well-known Toyota Prius, derive most of their power from gas, supplementing this with electricity generated from recaptured breaking power.
On the other hand, plug-in hybrids can be charged with a home charging station. These vehicles are becomingly increasingly common and popular, with models being manufactured by most major auto manufacturers, including Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo.
The person interviewed in the article was apparently a serious commuter, as she stated that she had previously spent about $80 on gas every three to four days. But with her new plug-in hybrid, she allegedly had not had to put gas in it for nearly four months.
If she was indeed putting 80 dollars’ worth of gas into her vehicle every four days, her total savings between electricity, water, and fueling her car would amount to $850 per month. Just the savings in fuel costs would amount to $7,200 per year.
The scale of these savings puts the true power of solar power into perspective. Without having to make a serious change in day to day behavior, but instead simply adopting more cost effective technologies, it’s possible to reduce your bills by many thousands of dollars per year. Taking this approach shortens the amount of time to justify the cost of installing a home solar system—in the case of Barnbrook, she may break even on her solar investment within four years.
While the Benefits of Solar are Obvious, You Do Have to Be Careful in Choosing a Solar System Installer
The article notes that due to the popularity of solar systems, solar installation companies are springing up all over the place, with more than 200 currently existing in San Diego alone. The problem is, many of these companies are fly-by-night operations that aren’t necessarily on the up-and-up.
Even if they’re good enough to do a competent job of installing your system, increasing regulations and legal requirements will drive many of these sketchy companies out of business, thus invalidating any installation warranties they might offer.
If you’re ready to make the jump to solar, make sure to contract with a reputable, well-established company.
