How Much Pollen is in Your Home?

If you have even the mildest seasonal allergies, chances are you’ve been suffering from sinus congestion and watery eyes. Spring is coming, and the many local trees, plants, and grasses have taken notice. While it’s obvious that pollen is in abundance in the great outdoors, are you aware of how much pollen is blowing into your home?

Keeping your home closed up won’t keep pollen out. Pollen particles are so tiny–only about 1/2000th of an inch across–that they can easily slip around closed doors and windows. And once pollen gets in your home, it’s difficult to get it out.

Indoor pollen levels don’t go down when outdoor pollen levels decrease.

Several years ago, a research study was conducted to find out just how much pollen could be found inside residential spaces. As it turned out, homes contain a great deal of pollen. But what was truly surprising was that during a period in which outdoor concentrations of pollen fell by 74%, indoor pollen levels increased by 67%. Like many unwelcome house guests, once pollen particles made it in, they didn’t want to leave.

There are two key consequences of this indoor buildup of pollen. First, your allergy symptoms may actually worsen when you’re in your home. Secondly, even as the season changes and pollen stops being produced, you may continue to suffer from allergies because of the pollen trapped in your home.

Unfortunately, vacuuming and dusting won’t fix the issue, as these actions simply stir up pollen.

Indoor pollen can trigger serious health effects.

The most common allergy symptoms are the watery eyes and sneezing that many are all-too-familiar with. But according to the EPA, indoor exposure to pollen can trigger more serious health effects, such pneumonitis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) and asthma.

In order to avoid serious health consequences, it’s necessary to remove the pollen particles that are trapped in your home.

Installing a media air filter can capture almost all airborne pollen particles, reducing indoor pollen levels.

You may be familiar with HEPA filters (high-efficiency particulate arrestance filters), which are extremely fine filters used in vacuum cleaners and other appliances to capture extremely small particles, such as dust, mold spores, and pollen. While HEPA filters are excellent when it comes to trapping pollen, they aren’t appropriate for use in HVAC systems. HEPA filters are simply too dense to allow sufficient air to pass through, resulting in extreme stress on the air compressor, which ultimately results in early system failure.

However, media air filters are compatible with forced air systems, and do an excellent job of capturing even extremely tiny pollen particles. Media filters are essentially extra large filters with additional pleats that increase the likelihood of capturing pollen particles as they pass through. Installing a media filter can substantially reduce indoor pollen levels, greatly reducing allergy symptoms.

System Balancing Can Improve Your Air Conditioner’s Performance

System balancing is all about carefully balancing airflow throughout your home.

Balancing your system means measuring and adjusting the volume of airflow into each room through a system of ducts in your home. Creating this balance is critical to maintaining comfort. As hard as this may be to believe, it’s not uncommon to find systems 30% to 50% low on airflow.

A number of tests using specialized tools are used in balancing your system:

  • Air balancing hoods measure the amount of air at each grille.
  • Hygrometers measure system temperature and humidity.
  • Manometers measure system pressures.

Static pressure is one of the key vital signs of your comfort system. Think of it like a doctor’s visit. Someone always checks your blood pressure. That’s your system’s static pressure. Measuring static pressure helps identify any significant blockage or leakage. Tips for Buying Your Next Air Conditioner

Central air conditioning systems can last from 15 to 20 years. Sticking with an older unit may seem less expensive, but not when it comes to utility bills. When time comes to buy a new air conditioning system, there are 3 things to remember.

First, is your new air conditioning system sized properly?

Sizing your air conditioner is based on both the latent cooling load, which is the humidity of the air, and the sensible cooling load, which is your home’s air temperature.

That’s why we start by measuring floors, ceilings, walls, and windows. We check insulation in the attic, walls, and crawl spaces. We also check for leaky, disconnected, or crushed ducts, or ducts that are too small for the system and constrict airflow. All this data is necessary to calculate proper sizing. A properly sized air conditioner can maintain a 20 degree difference between the outside and inside temperature of your home.

But, did you know that most of the cooling process is actually dehumidification? An improperly sized system might cool your home, but leave an uncomfortable, clammy feeling. That’s a breeding ground for allergens and mold. Oversized air conditioners cycle on and off too quickly, using more energy and preventing removal of humidity. Undersized systems, on the other hand, may not be able to reach comfortable temperatures on hot days. And since they have to work too hard, they run up higher electric bills.

Only a correctly sized unit will provide optimal performance, operating life, and energy efficiency.

Now, while AC size is important, so is the location of the condenser.

For optimal performance, the condenser unit should be located in a cool, shaded place, ideally on your home’s north side, out of direct sunlight. It also needs unimpeded airflow, with at least 4 feet of clearance at the top.

It’s also important that the inside coil is located for easy access, so it can be reached for annual cleanings.

Finally, don’t be tempted by the lowest bid.

Use printouts of the cooling load calculations for each air conditioner to directly compare the attributes of each unit. Also, be sure to check the Internet for reviews of each air conditioning company. In particular, keep a close eye out for reviews that include details of what the reviewer’s experience was like months or years after their air conditioner was installed.

Cutting corners on your air conditioner or the installer will cost you more in the long run. Improperly sized or installed air conditioners will run much more efficiently than indicated by their ratings, resulting in higher than necessary energy bills.

Freon Prices Are Soaring… And They’re Never Coming Back Down


Back in October of last year, we posted a blog post about the upcoming ban on R-22, better known as Freon, a refrigerant used in many older air conditioners. In the post, we discussed how an agreement made back in 1987 is pushing R-22 out of the marketplace permanently, with a final comprehensive ban taking effect in 2020.

At the time, we predicted that R-22 prices, which had already been rising, would soar over the next couple years as 2020 approached.

Well, according to news stations across the country, Freon prices are indeed soaring:

These news outlets and others are reporting ever climbing prices for the precious resource. One Wisconsin homeowner was quoted a price of $900 per bottle, while the owner of a heating and air company in North Carolina quoted a price of $800 per jug, with it costing over $2,000 to repair and fully charge a system using R-22.

Some areas have seen price increases of 300% in the last year, while a Wisconsin technician claimed a year over year cost increase of 500%.

Soon, increasingly expensive R-22 Freon will simply become impossible to find.

Ways to Stay Cool Without Central AC


There are many days in Sacramento and much of Central California where it’s impossible to function without the use of an air conditioner. As of July 23rd, we’ve had 8 days with high temperatures above 100 degrees, and 21 out of 23 days have had highs of 90 or more.

When it’s that hot out, it’s absolutely necessary to have a functioning AC, as cracking a window is only going to make your house warmer. However, when we look to the homes of yesteryear, we find that our forebears were experts at taking advantage of cool evenings, and utilized a number of other clever innovations to keep indoor temperatures down.

Would you like to cut your cooling costs? Here are just a few ideas for decreasing your reliance on your air conditioner and reducing your electricity bills.

Create cross drafts to pump in cool evening or morning air from outside.

Have you ever walked through a home or building a felt a strong breeze flowing through? This is accomplished by creating a “cross draft.” Cross drafts are formed when two openings are created—such as with two windows, or with a window and door—that are spaced apart and align with one another.

A cross draft is great for rapidly pumping hot daytime air out of a home and replacing it with cooler evening air. If you’ve left your air conditioner off during the day, creating a cross draft is a much more cost efficient way of cooling your home off.

This is easiest to accomplish if you live in a narrow shotgun style home in which the front door aligns with a back door or bedroom window; these can be used to create a cross draft that runs through the entire home. But, any room in which a room has windows or other openings on two opposing walls can be opened up to create a cross draft.

If you have an openable skylight, use a fan to push hot air up and out.

Back in the 1800s and early 1900s, the occasional home featured a cupola, a small turret-like structure with open sides that allowed hot air to escape out the top. This effect can be recreated if you have skylights which can be opened. To maximize this effect, position a fan under it, blowing up and out the skylight. This will create a vacuum which pulls cool air in through open windows.

Make the most of your porch—overhangs help shade the front of your home.

If you ever walk through Midtown Sacramento, you’ll find many homes from the turn of the century through the ‘30s and ‘40s which feature large porches. Some homes even have porches that wrap around one or both sides.

Porches have a dual benefit. First, they create a comfortable, shaded area to sit outside when the weather is good. Secondly, the roof over a porch shades the front wall and windows of the home, reducing the amount of sunlight absorbed by the home as heat.

If your porch has minimal protection, see what options you have for installing or extending porch overhangs. You can also visit your local hardware store, which likely carries outdoor shades designed for installation on patios and porches.

Go old school with window awnings.

If you ever look at photos of apartment buildings and homes from the turn of the century, you might notice that it wasn’t unusual for windows to have awnings installed above them.


These fabric coverings reflected sunlight and shaded windows and the rooms they opened onto. Some homes even had awnings installed over their porches in order to maximize the cooling potential provided by the roof overhanging the porch.

To take advantage of these upgrades, you’ll need to start by contacting us by calling 888-868-2316, or sending us a message through our appointment request form. We’ll need to have an evaluator come out and survey the condition of your home, and then sit down with you and put together an upgrade plan featuring multiple upgrades.

You cannot apply for a rebate by simply getting a single upgrade and applying after the fact. The upgrades must be performed as part of a comprehensive plan put together by our experts, and then submitted to SMUD for a pre-approval. Failing to get pre-approval will disallow you from taking advantage of the rebate program.

PG&E Energy Upgrade California Home Upgrade Program

The PG&E Energy Upgrade California Home Upgrade is very similar to SMUD’s program in terms of what it offers and how it works. Homeowners who take advantage of the basic home upgrade option are eligible for up to $2,500, as long as they install three or more of the listed upgrade. Those who participate in the advanced home upgrade can qualify for up to $5,500 in benefits.

Some of the basic upgrade rebates available include:

  • Attic Insulation & Plane Air Sealing: $500
  • Efficient Gas Furnace (95% AFUE): $400
  • Efficient Gas Furnace (92% AFUE): $350
  • Floor Insulation $400
  • Wall Insulation: $400
  • Duct Replacement: $350
  • Duct Sealing: $200
  • High Performance HVAC Install: $200

As with the SMUD program, to obtain a rebate from PG&E, it’s necessary to have us come out and perform an energy assessment of your home, and then develop an upgrade plan that is approved by PG&E.
